Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his visit to the US capital that Vladimir Putin's decision to request talks with Donald Trump indicates Moscow is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Moscow is scrambling to resume conversations immediately after it learns of cruise missiles." This statement referred to recent musings about providing long-range missiles to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and Global Responses

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is trying to disrupt the momentum toward greater sanctions on the Kremlin." He added, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Russia to get serious seem to have diminished."

The development came after Trump had recently been hardening his language toward Russia until the recent call with the Russian president, which the Russian government described as "extremely frank and constructive."

European Fuel Restrictions and Market Impact

The European Union have set a requirement for fuel importers into the EU to demonstrate their fuels are not sourced from Russian oil, according to a document released on Thursday. This measure is part of the EU's forthcoming prohibition on imports of fuels processed from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its war in the region.

Market analysts observed that investment patterns appeared to be factoring in the possible end of Indian imports of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, according to insiders knowledgeable about the matter.

"This represents a positive development for the crude oil price as it would remove a big buyer of Russian crude," commented Tony Sycamore, noting that crude values were stable on Thursday.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Moscow's unmanned aircraft and missile attack hit energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in eight regions. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces launched numerous of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," declared Ukraine's president, adding that attacks impacted the areas of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Diplomatic Responses

Ukraine's representative to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, asserted that Moscow showed its true attitude to peace through the "violence" of these attacks. "The Russian government once again chose missiles over dialogue, turning this attack into a clear blow to current peace efforts," she said.

Meanwhile, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU had little option but to strengthen defensive systems against Russian threats. She revealed a "roadmap" to prepare for potential security challenges by 2030, including a new defensive network to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

This initiative, called the "European drone defence initiative," is projected to start operations initially by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. EU authorities hopes to secure the support of member state representatives at a summit next week.
