The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
