A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was approached by a trio of assailants, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The purpose of the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested are in custody, according to authorities.

Details of the Attack

Law enforcement said that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a premises near the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, it was reported.

"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," an official report stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a individual with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but collapsed across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the attack.

A broadcasting director said that "Stock was far beyond a TV personality. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen. His dedication to creativity left an lasting impression."

In a release, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his presence, warmth and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will endure".
