Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
