Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for making aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the player and his coach.
