A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 535-pound fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates locations throughout Japan and overseas.

"The first tuna signals good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the traditional January sale.

Known as the King of Tuna, this businessman is renowned for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This new acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally characterized by exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the winner's sushi establishments immediately after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've started the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," said one happy diner.
